2018 - 2019 Consumer Electronics B2C UX/UI design Smart tech Smart drill

Context

I joined Robbox in 2018 to design the user interface for the world's first generation of Smart Digital Power Tools. My role involved conducting user research, creating wireframes, and iterating on prototypes to ensure a seamless and intuitive user experience. Collaborating closely with engineers and stakeholders, I focused on simplifying complex functionalities into user-friendly interactions.

Problem

Designing for a small screen had challenges. The interface needed to accommodate complex functionalities like stud finding, laser measuring, and material selection, all while ensuring ease of use. The limited screen size required prioritizing essential features and presenting them in a clear, concise manner. Additionally, the interface had to be intuitive for users who might not be tech-savvy, making it crucial to minimize the learning curve. Balancing functionality with simplicity was a key challenge, as was ensuring the interface could be operated seamlessly in various environments, including construction sites with dust, vibrations, and gloves. Choosing the right color and typography was also critical. The interface needed to be bright and legible to ensure visibility and usability in diverse lighting conditions.

Research

Designing a user interface for a drill presented unique challenges, as there were no existing UI standards for such devices. To address this, I drew inspiration from designs for smartwatches, which emphasize simplicity and focus on one task per screen. This approach helped ensure that the interface remained intuitive and user-friendly. Additionally, I conducted interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs) to gain deeper insights into their needs and pain points. These discussions revealed critical features and workflows that were essential for the target audience, such as precise material selection and easy-to-use measurement tools. This research informed the design decisions and ensured the product met user expectations effectively.

Design exploration

Early Visualization: In Adobe After Effects I created a 3D visionary glimpse into the world of this groundbreaking drill.

Solution

I spearheaded the design of the world's first user interface for a smart drill, collaborating closely with the visionary CEO. The interface needed to be simple, clear, and user-friendly. The interface incorporated intuitive navigation, clear visual hierarchy, and responsive feedback to enhance usability.
